SA's best Chenin & Pinotage up for bids in Cape Heritage Auction Friday, 26 March 2021

Wine Cellar Weekly: Strauss & Co Auction, 95pt Chenin, classic Burgundy & more

Strauss & Co’s themed auction series continues this week with the online Cape Heritage fine wine auction. The spotlight is on Chenin Blanc and Pinotage as cornerstones of the South African wine industry. All our top Chenin and Pinotage producers are on show – Alheit Vineyards, Sadie Family, Kanonkop, Beeslaar, Ken Forrester, Beaumont and De Morgenzon, amongst others. The line-up also includes a rare, 100-point Chateau Libertas which has become a benchmark for vintage reds in SA. Bidding closes at 8 pm on Monday, 29 March.

Our other wine picks of the week include a mature Cabernet Sauvignon, a 95-point Chenin Blanc and a great buy from a Burgundy producer ‘to watch’.

Alheit Vineyards, Radio Lazarus 2015 (Lot 524)
Estimate: R 6,000 - R 7,000

Radio Lazarus is fast becoming one of SA’s greatest cult wines. It was first released commercially in 2012 and the last commercial release was 2017 (the 2018 vintage was released only privately due to the minuscule volumes). The wine’s incredible story, consistent quality and ceased production make it a textbook collector’s wine that should last for many years.

Chateau Libertas, Red 1957 (Lot 538)
Estimate: R 18,000 - R 24,000

One of the most celebrated vintage red wines under this iconic label, this bottle comes straight from the Winshaw family cellar. Tasted, topped up and recorked under the supervision of Amorim in 2019, any doubts around the condition of this legendary wine are put to bed. A must for any serious South African wine collector and enthusiast!

Vergelegen, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2008
R 420 per bottle

This Cabernet Sauvignon from the legendary André van Rensburg is quickly becoming an office favourite. The wine shows incredible fruit purity under an attractive herbaceous and bay leaf framework that should age well for another decade. This is serious, mature Cabernet Sauvignon for a steal.

Eenzaamheid, Chenin Blanc 2019
R 205 per bottle

We have secured a few bottles of the Christian Eedes' recent 95-pointer. Not widely available as yet, this is a great example of Paarl's potential to produce exquisite whites. With previous Platter's 5-star ratings as well, this will be one to watch.

Harmand-Geoffroy, Gevrey-Chambertin 2016
R 795 per bottle

‘This once under-the-radar and overperforming property is now firmly in the cult category.’ – Allen Meadows. An ‘uber-classic’ Gevrey-Chambertin from one of the producers to watch in Burgundy. Powerful, yet graceful, this vibrant Gevrey shows the black-fruited, earthy notes and mineral core that are the hallmarks of truly great Gevrey-Chambertin. From the small and rare 2016 vintage, this is an excellent buy at pre-COVID pricing.
