Wine Cellar Weekly: Rare 100-point Champagne, Syrah from Saint-Joseph, rockstar Chenin & more

Last week we held our first tasting event of the year – an exploration of 15 years of Sauvignon Blanc. We're excited to share the crowd-pleasers from the line-up with you and to see that this variety is on the rise. We have two bottles of Louis Roederer's perfect-scoring Cristal Rosé 2002 on offer plus, something for the Northern Rhône enthusiasts from the Verzier family. Our other top picks of the week include Reenen Borman's new Kottabos Skin Contact Chenin and Newton Johnson's Walker Bay Pinot. Lastly, for lovers of lighter-styled Beaujolais, the Chiroubles La Grosse Pierre 2019 is perfect for these summer days.

Newton Johnson, Walker Bay Pinot Noir 2020
R 260 per bottle

Newton Johnson produces some of SA's finest examples of Pinot Noir. Their 2020 Walker Bay Pinot Noir (from Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and Bot River fruit) is 'meticulously made,' writes Platter's Guide. While Tim Atkin MW says 'this is 'only' the Walker Bay Pinot Noir from the Newton Johnsons, but it's pretty special at the price.' Floral, fruity with supple tannins, it's ready to be enjoyed now.

Louis Roederer, Cristal Rosé 2002
R 11,500 per bottle

A special addition to our collection of wines is two bottles of the rare, 100-point Cristal Rosé 2002 from Louis Roederer. 'The 2002 Cristal Rosé has always been suspected to become a legend one day,' says Stephan Reinhardt of Wine Advocate who gave it a perfect score. 'Is there anything more we could expect from a Rosé Champagne? If I just could, I would marry the 2002 Cristal Rosé straightaway,' he continues. Praise follows in spades from the likes of Antonio Galloni, Jancis Robinson, Decanter and more. For those who don't manage to get their hands on a bottle, view our selection of vintage Champagne on our brokerage list.

Verzier, Saint-Joseph Empreinte & Madone 2019
From R 550 per bottle

Lovers of Northern Rhône Syrah, you don't want to miss out on Verzier's Saint-Josephs. The Empreinte 2019 offers taut, red fruits mingled with peppery spice and savoury intrigue – a great introduction to the more serious Madone 2019. Shaped by 50-year-old vines, the Madone has similar elements but the intensity is turned up. Layers of violets, olive brine and dark raspberries lead to a mouthwatering finish. Both have a vibrant freshness to last another decade.

Review: Sauvignon Blanc tasting
From R 160 per bottle

The 2021 vintage was an excellent year for Sauvignon Blanc and, with the aim to prove just how well they age, we explored 15 years of Sauvignon Blanc at our first tasting for 2022. From youthful, fruit-driven 2021s through to the mature and complex 2007 vintage, it captured the essence of the age-ability of this noble grape. The 2021s from the Iona, Tokara and Klein Constantia trio showed their class, and offer superb value. Highlights included the Klein Constantia 2016 and Waterford's 2007 Sauvignon Blanc. It is safe to say that Sauvignon Blanc is on the rise!

Kottabos, Chenin Blanc Skin Contact 2021
R 200 per bottle

From Stellenbosch rockstar, Reenen Borman, we bring you the 2021 Kottabos Skin Contact Chenin Blanc. The previous vintage saw both a Chenin and a Skin Contact Chenin under this label, however the 2021 release focuses only on this 100% skin contact wine which adds extra complexity. A textured, flavourful wine with stone fruit, citrus, ginger, spice and dried herbs which lead to a grippy finish. A must try.

Grosse Pierre, Chiroubles La Grosse Pierre 2019
R 330 per bottle

Organic Domaine de La Grosse Pierre's Pauline Passot is 'clearly a rising star' as per Vinous and 'a breath of fresh air to Chiroubles's high-altitude, largely decomposed granite slopes,' says Wine Advocate. Their Chiroubles La Grosse Pierre from the widely-praised and elegant 2019 vintage, is fine-boned, vibrant and delicious! Perfect chilled for these summer days.
