Launch of Glenelly Lady May 2019, new Scions of Sinai, ‘forgotten’ Rioja, & a punchy Dolcetto

We were delighted to host the launch of the 2019 vintage of Glenelly Lady May this week – and it's unquestionably one of the smartest 2019s we’ve tasted! From Piedmont, the sunny and playful Marengo Dolcetto d’Alba 2022 will brighten up those grey days, while the Cuatro Corros 2021 from MacRobert & Canals in Rioja is a fascinating old-vine blend of red and white grapes. Enjoyed last week at a staff tasting, Joseph Drouhin's Mâcon-Bussières Les Clos 2021 is a true bargain Burgundy Blanc for only R395, and if there’s one Pinotage you should be drinking regularly, it’s the Scions of Sinai Féniks 2023.

Glenelly Lady May 2019
R 850 PER BOTTLE

We recently tasted the newly released Glenelly Lady May 2019 blind alongside international giants, including the 97-point Domaine de Chevalier Pessac-Léognan 2019. The verdict? The Lady May 2019 is a world-class Bordeaux-style red and stands tall amongst its international counterparts. It offers spectacular value compared to leading Bordeaux.

Marengo Dolcetto d'Alba 2022
R 295 PER BOTTLE

The Marengo family are based in La Morra, Piedmont, and have been producing Barolo since 1899. Meaning ‘little sweet one’, this Dolcetto packs a serious punch – it’s neither little, nor sweet! The palate is vibrant and fruity, with notes of black cherry, almond, and crushed blueberry with surprisingly silky tannins. Pair it with red meat dishes, especially Piedmontese classics like Scaloppine al Marsala, or pasta with tomato-based sauces.

MacRobert & Canals Cuatro Corros 2021
R 625 PER BOTTLE

First made in 2020 in the ‘forgotten Rioja’ style, the Cuatro Corros is a blend of 50% red (Garnacha, Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano) and 50% white grapes (Viura, Malvasia and Garnacha Blanca) from vines planted between 1939 and 1955. This pale red brings so much joy. It’s lively and complex with red berries and florals, fine tannins, a chalky texture, and a very long finish. Only a few hundred bottles were produced from this incredible project.

Joseph Drouhin Mâcon-Bussières Les Clos 2021
R 395 PER BOTTLE

Whilst 2021 was a challenging vintage in Mâcon, 'producers were rewarded with tiny quantities of excellent wines,' says Neal Martin. Clay and chalk soils from the Jurassic era help produce this beautifully balanced Chardonnay that shows notes of pear, lily and orange blossom, enriched by a river pebble minerality and a subtle saline finish. Fresh and expressive, it's ideal with light seafood pastas and makes for an irresistible evening drink.

Scions of Sinai Féniks Pinotage 2023
R 380 PER BOTTLE

The Scions of Sinai Féniks Pinotage is another sophisticated release from Bernhard Bredell. His deft hand has produced a wine of clarity and understated power – showing crystalline red fruit over a palate filled with savoury depth and chalky, dry tannins. From a vineyard planted in 1976, we have no doubt this Pinotage will last at least a decade.
