These iconic vintage wines have been meticulously inspected and recorked, offering buyers the best possible guarantee of provenance. This week’s roundup also includes the truly exceptional 2021 release of Alheit Cartology, a moreish Spanish red from Ribera del Duero, and a mix of exciting wines to explore in our July value pack. For those with deeper pockets, don’t miss the superb Henri Boillot Montrachet Grand Cru 2019.

Alheit Vineyards, Cartology 2021
R 395 PER BOTTLE

It was 10 years ago that Cartology first took the world by storm. Chris and Suzaan are never ones to rest on their laurels, and the latest 2021 release is a testament to the high standards they’ve set for the SA wine industry and themselves. This is one of the most important South African wines to be released in the last decade! You can view all of the Alheit 2021 releases here, but please note that some of these sought-after wines are only available on allocation.

Wine Cellar Insiders', July Value Mixed 6-Pack
R 1,035 PER CASE – FREE DELIVERY

From our favourite Portuguese producer, Niepoort, comes a smashable, yet sophisticated field blend – the Drink me Branco. Next in this month’s value pack is a delicious entry-level Chenin from Brookdale that punches well above its weight: the Mason Road 2021. Kruger Family Wines makes a delicate, juicy, unoaked Chardonnay with a few years of age, perfect for a Sunday roast or warming risotto. For the reds, we have a classical, refined blend: the Dombeya Fenix from Haskell Vineyards, which pairs well with winter stews. Another go-to for cold nights is the Ernie Els Major Series Cabernet Sauvignon from the ‘perfect’ 2017 vintage. For something a little lighter, we have an Elgin Pinot that’s serious juice for a not-so-serious price.

Henri Boillot, Montrachet Grand Cru 2019
R 19,950 PER BOTTLE

Montrachet is the grandest of Grand Cru Burgundy. ‘If it’s bargains (of a kind) that you are looking for, you should rush out and buy the two bottles they (Wine Cellar) have in stock –unusually for South Africa, that’s actually a remarkably low price: Wine-searcher.com lists it at about R25K in the UK, and a shop in New York offers it at R36K, both of those scary prices excluding sales tax.’ – Tim James, Winemag. For one of the pinnacles of white Burgundy, and with the ability to last until roughly 2039, we couldn’t agree more!
