This week was full of excitement as the results of two anticipated wine awards were released. The prestigious 2022 Platter's Guide as well as the Winemag Prescient Top 20 Wines in South Africa. We're pleased to have a selection of these gems still available. We also hosted our second set of tastings in Joburg and Cape Town this past week which comprised of some of the finest New-World Chardonnay, Pinot and Syrah from California and SA. Find out below who was victorious in this taste-off. Lastly, we have two 'must-try' wines – the new, terroir-driven Rebel Rebel releases and The Black Swan from Steenberg.

Winemag Prescient: Top 20 Wines SA 2021

We're pleased to offer you some of the 2021 winners. The Cavalli Filly Chenin 2020 was named Best White Overall and, at under R130, it provides incredible value. We have limited stock of the Best Cabernet Sauvignon in the category – Rust en Vrede's Single Vineyard Cab 2018, the Bosman Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot 2020, which was named Best Pinot Noir, and the Best Merlot which was awarded to De Grendel's 2019 Merlot. Congratulations to all the winners and to Vergelegen who was named Winery of the Year!

Rebel Rebel, maiden releases

Kayleigh Hattingh's exciting new label, Rebel Rebel, sees the release of her maiden 2020 Syrah and 2021 Colombar. These minimal intervention, terroir-driven wines were produced from special sites in Bottelary, Stellenbosch. 'The first time I walked through this vineyard and tasted these grapes, I dreamt of making wine from this very special site,' recalls Kayleigh. The Syrah is 'plenty flavourful with just the right amount of fleshiness about it,' wrote Christian Eedes, scoring it 93 points. The Colombar was produced from vines planted in 1986 and is a vibrant white with lemongrass, guava and a tangy acidity.

Cape vs. California tasting: Top wines

Inspired by a new-wave revolution taking off in California and SA, we couldn't resist comparing talented winemakers from these regions. At both events, Sandhi's Sta. Rita Hills Sanford & Benedict Chardonnay 2018 was a clear favourite as it posed to be powerful and structured yet upholding a freshness and a light-footed salinity. The entry-level Sonoma County Pinot Noir from Kutch was delicious, showcasing lovely perfume and fruit concentration, it offers wonderful complexity to savour. The Boschkloof Syrah 2019 was the SA red wine of the tasting which highlight's Reenen's talent of Nothern-Rhone-inspired SA Syrah.

Steenberg, The Black Swan 2020

We recently spent an afternoon at Steenberg, learning of their terroir and tasting through their new vintages. We were impressed by their 100% Sauvignon Blanc – The Black Swan. Produced from their best vineyards, the mouth-watering 2020 is an excellent accompaniment to food. It has blackcurrant leaf, fynbos freshnes and an 'excellent balance between green & tropical fruit,' wrote Platter's, scoring it 94 points in their recent 2022 edition.

Platter's Guide 2022: 5-star wines

Platter's eagerly awaited list of 5-star wines was released this week and saw 234 wines across 28 different categories receive the sought-after rating. As in previous editions, Red and White Blends were the top-performing classes, followed by Chenin Blanc. Congratulations to all the producers and their teams on this incredible achievement.
