Wine Cellar Weekly: Strauss & Co Fine Wine Auction, Argentinian 100-pointer and new local releases

The past week has been filled with excitement as the Strauss & Co Fine Wine Auction 2021 calendar kicked off with a Rhône-themed sale. The catalogue features an incredible selection of Châteauneuf-du-Pape from top vintages. This is almost a complete list showcasing the greatest wines from the oldest appellation in France. Château Rayas, Clos du Caillou, Clos des Papes, Télégraphe, Beaucastel as well as Pierre Usseglio and Henri Bonneau are a few of the outstanding lots to look out for. Be sure to place your bids before the close of the auction on Monday, 22 February at 8 pm.

On the local front we have the new release of Lukas van Loggerenberg’s Break a Leg Blanc de Noir, with the 2020 Break a Leg range expanding to include a Chardonnay and Merlot. We also have a stand-out from Testalonga – the 97-point El Bandito Cortez 2020. From Argentina, we were able to secure a few cases of the perfect scoring (100/100) Cheval des Andes 2017.

Henri Bonneau, Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Marie Beurrier 1998
Estimate: R 17,000 – R 18,000

Henri Bonneau produced more than 50 vintages of Châteauneuf-du-Pape before he passed in 2016. Along with the Reynards of Château Rayas, his family is the appellation’s greatest guardian of traditional winemaking. Vintage bottles from this cult producer, when Henri was at the heights of his winemaking, are extremely rare.

Pierre Usseglio, Châteauneuf-du-Pape Mon Aïeul 2007
Estimate: R 7,000 – R 9,000

While this property also has roots dating back 50 years, it has been ‘on fire’ since 1998. Bothers Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio have developed the property to represent the modern style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. ‘Thrillingly concentrated, intense, perfumed and layered with incredible balance,’ writes Wine Advocate on this Grenache with 99 points. It is one of the finest wines produced by this Domaine.
