Prestigious Lalande-de-Pomerol, benchmark Viognier, red slate Riesling & more

Samantha O’Keefe’s winemaking journey is marked by resilience and innovation. From pioneering vineyards in Greyton, to rebuilding after the devastating 2019 fire – Lismore Age of Grace Viognier 2021 stands as a benchmark in SA. Across the globe in the Mosel Valley, Clemens Busch continues to push the boundaries of biodynamic winemaking with their Riesling Vom Roten Schiefer 2022. For those who love the richness of Port, the Niepoort LBV 2018 offers an elegant yet approachable experience, while Van Loggerenberg’s Breton Cabernet Franc 2022 Magnum is an outstanding interpretation of the variety, perfect for sharing with loved ones this winter. Finally, L'Etoile Lalande de Pomerol 2018, from the renowned Thienpont family, will add a touch of Pomerol refinement to your collection.

Lismore Age of Grace Viognier 2021
R 250 per bottle

Samantha O’Keefe has many inspirational stories under her belt. She’s been met with critical acclaim and compliments, and her 2021 Age of Grace Viognier is excellent, says Neal Martin, showing ‘pretty white peach and Mirabelle scents’. The wine is ‘well balanced and nicely detailed’, notes Christian Eedes. Grab the last few bottles and drink now to 2030.

Clemens Busch Riesling Vom Roten Schiefer 2022
R 400 PER BOTTLE

From Germany’s foremost biodynamic pioneer comes this beautifully spicy and very appetizing (Vinous) Riesling. The red slate soils in Pünderich are the rarest of the three types (red, blue and grey) and showed particularly well in 2022. From the famous Rothenpfad and Nonnengarten vineyards, the wine is finely spiced with intensely pure flavours of peach and grapefruit, supported by a crystalline structure, vibrant acidity and a touch of saltiness at the end. It’s a chameleon with food, pairing well with spicy tacos, sushi, roasted root vegetables and chicken, bobotie and more.

Niepoort LBV Port 2018 (375ml)
R 190 PER BOTTLE

Late Bottled Vintage Port is like Vintage Port in style but without the price tag. Described as very fresh and lively and ready to attack (JancisRobinson.com), this beauty is all about structure and fruity intensity. ‘Late Bottled’ Port is aged for four to six years before being bottled, whereas ‘Vintage’ Port is bottled after only two years. Stylistically, LBV is a cross between Vintage and Ruby Port since Ruby Port should be drunk quite young, while a great Vintage Port may need 15-20 years to open up. As Neal Martin puts it, Port is for life, not just for Christmas.’ At R190 for 375ml, buy this by the caseload.

Van Loggerenberg Wines Breton Cabernet Franc 2022 Magnum (1500ml)
R 890 BOTTLE

Lukas’ brilliant ‘blue-eyed boy’ wine in double the size? Now who wouldn’t want that. Regarded as a Loire valley nut, there’s no doubt that this is a world-class expression of the variety’, says Tim Atkin. An easy 96 points, the wine is perfumed and so delicious. It’s best enjoyed with friends, family and plenty of gees while supporting our boys in green and gold during the Rugby Championships.

L'Etoile Lalande de Pomerol 2018
R 650 BOTTLE

What a gem of a wine from a serious pedigree partnership between Francois and Guillaume Thienpont of Vieux Château Certan and Le Pin. The vineyard is situated in the heart of Lalande-de-Pomerol, a stone’s throw from the hallowed soils of Pomerol. The 2018 is full of rich red fruit with a typical Lalande-de-Pomerol spine of freshness, and is absolutely heavenly at the moment. For R650, it is a steal. Stock up!
