Niepoort Vertente 2019

The 2019 Vertente from Portuguese legend Dirk Niepoort is a field blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and others. A Wine Cellar favourite at only R325, it’s ‘one of the winery’s best values,’ according to the Wine Advocate. This graceful, textured wine shows crunchy red and black fruit followed by foresty graphite notes on the palate. It’s drinking beautifully now but will comfortably age for at least another decade.

This is a fine, mineral expression of Grenache Blanc that celebrates detailed texture over fruit forwardness. Christian Eedes highlights its ‘great presence’ on the palate and layers of flavour. A 50/50 blend of Voor Paardeberg and Piekenierskloof fruit from granitic soils, the wine has a visceral and vibrant structure, offering refreshment and subtlety over power.
