If you’re looking for bottled history, this week’s selection includes our 2020 allocation of Bordeaux’s Clos Manou Cuvée 1850 – an extremely limited wine in sublime condition. La Rioja Alta’s Gran Reserva 904 Selección Especial 2015 in magnum is a must for collectors and red wine enthusiasts alike, and we love the Yardstick Chardonnay 2023, made by the multi-talented Adam Mason. Chapoutier’s Occultum Lapidem Blanc 2019 seriously over delivers at R330, and there’s ‘a lot of Champagne in this bottle for the money’, says Vinous of the Éclats de Meulière Extra Brut NV. From the Swartland to Bordeaux, our March Insiders’ Case has something for every palate. And finally, Strauss & Co’s 2015 Vintage Auction offers rare, iconic, and highly collectible wines at attractive prices.

Clos Manou Cuvée 1850
R 2,750 per bottle
From a parcel of some of the oldest vines in all of Bordeaux comes Clos Manou Cuvée 1850 – predating the First World War and predating phylloxera, the plot was planted in 1850! Walking the vineyard is akin to visiting something from the ancient world. It's an exceptional experience, managed like a garden by the Dief family. And what of the wine? Tasting the 2020 vintage recently, it's all about purity and salinity. Only 900 bottles are produced annually and it’s absolutely delicious.

La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 Selección Especial 2015 Magnum
R 2,850 per bottle
What’s better than the 904 Gran Reserva 2015 from La Rioja Alta? A magnum of the wine! The Selección Especial is brilliant in its infancy – even though it’s already 10 years old – and will age even more gracefully in magnum. This blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano is perfumed and vivid, with characteristic Rioja spice, layer upon layer of flavour, classical fine-grained tannins, and a chalky freshness on the ‘impressively long’ finish (Vinous).

Yardstick Chardonnay 2023
R 260 per bottle
Chardonnay is Adam Mason’s desert island wine and this one flies well under the radar. From Stellenbosch fruit, it offers bright citrus notes, yellow florals, apricots, and greengage elements, giving way to a satisfying rich and saline finish. A very pleasurable drink all year round, but Adam suggests pairing it with a classic bouillabaisse or roast quail with butternut and caramelised pears.

Chapoutier Occultum Lapidem Blanc 2019
R 330 per bottle
Roussillon is ‘magic’; it’s a region that ‘defies rules and expectations’, says Tamlyn Currin of JancisRobinson.com. This white blend of Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris and Vermentino embodies Michel Chapoutier's vision to authentically showcase a region's capabilities. It displays tropical fruit, citrus, salty minerality and white flowers, with ‘beautiful balance and a great finish’ (Jeb Dunnuck).
