Chapoutier's brandies: Eaux-de-Vie from Ermitage & Côte-Rôtie
Known as a pioneering spirit in the global winemaking community, the Rhône's dynamic master, Michel Chapoutier, has carried his passion for terroir over to the production of exquisite Eaux-de-Vie from the Rhône Valley. In 1985, he tasted his grandfather's brandy from the 1900s for the first time. It was still in barrel! This made him understand the art and importance of slow-ageing. Watch him speak about it here.
After 2 decades of importing M. Chapoutier's wines, we are delighted to offer their vintage Fines, Marcs and Marcs d’Appellation for the first time! This is a great opportunity to receive these wines at discounted pre-shipment prices for arrival in 2 months.
Single-batch distillation, in their 100-year-old copper column still, is used to preserve the aromatic authenticity of the different Rhône Valley terroirs. The Fines (distilled lees) and Marcs (distilled skins and solids) are then aged for 15-20 years in older pièces (228L barrels) and demi-muids (600L barrels). This ageing adds aromatic complexity and allows it to develop an intensely golden colour with burnt orange and copper tints. The evaporation of alcohol over the years, known as the angels' share, has brought the natural alcohol by volume down to 42 degrees.
The 3 Fine Eaux-de-Vie hail from excellent Rhône vintages, 1995, 1998 and 1999, which each produced full, fine grained wines with immense ageing potential. The Marc Vieux NV is a blend of Eaux-de-Vie de marc from Chapoutier's terroirs in the northern and southern Rhône Valley: Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the likes. Finally, the 2 Marcs d'Appellation hail from 2 of Chapoutier's most celebrated terroirs in the northern Rhône: Ermitage and Côte-Rôtie.
