Lukas van Loggerenberg – His best set of wines to date!

Dear *|FNAME|*,

These are the most compelling releases from star winemaker Lukas van Loggerenberg to date. In the words of Greg Sherwood MW, Lukas's wines have 'incredible focus and tension, purity and liquid minerality that lays bare the terroir characteristics of his various selected vineyards'. They speak of a confident winemaker who has fully mastered his craft.

Lukas has recently moved to a new cellar, allowing him space and the opportunity to produce wines that fulfil his potential and vision – these 2020s are staggeringly good!

The 2020 Trust your Gut Chenin Blanc is a remarkable wine with the power and finesse – not unlike great, white Burgundy – that warrants its high 98-point score from Christian Eedes. It's stunning.

The 2020 Geronimo Cinsaut is very European in style. Eschewing fruit for savoury interest, it's a high-toned food wine that fits into the Beaujolais cru mould with its deep sense of character. It holds joint place for Christian Eedes' highest-rated Cinsaut.

Arguably the most improved wine in this year's release is the 2020 Breton Cabernet Franc. Like no other Cab Franc in SA, it has a wonderful balance between floral perfume, crushed herbal freshness, tilled earth complexity, fruit density and a saline, dry finish. This is Cabernet Franc at its best.

And finally, from the now-famous Karibib vineyard (shared with Sons of Sugarland and Damascene), we have the 2020 Graft Syrah. Deep fruited and immensely powerful, it impresses with fruit weight, perfume and spice complexity.

While these limited bottlings are all excellent, they stand out because each one is so distinctly crafted.

Tasting notes

Van Loggerenberg Wines, Trust your Gut Chenin Blanc 2020

'The nose shows citrus and peach with slight notes of struck match, wet wool, and talcum powder in the background. The palate, meanwhile, is extraordinarily compact and concentrated with bracing acidity and a finish that goes on and on. It's a wonderfully precise, well-proportioned, and nuanced wine.'Christian Eedes, Winemag, 98/100

Van Loggerenberg Wines, Geronimo Cinsaut 2020

'Subtle and ethereal aromatics – initially pretty notes of rose, herbs, red currant, raspberry, and plums but darker berries, olive, and spice come to the fore with time in the glass. The palate has pure fruit, invigorating acidity, and fine yet grippy tannins. Great structure – neither too frivolous nor too brutish. Very well-judged.'Christian Eedes, Winemag, 95/100

Van Loggerenberg Wines, Breton Cabernet Franc 2020

'Striking aromatics of red and blackberries, olive, herbs, tomato leaf, and a hint of violets. The palate is medium-bodied and nicely poised – good fruit definition, fresh acidity, and some crunch to the tannins (alcohol is 13%).'Christian Eedes, Winemag, 94/100

Van Loggerenberg Wines, The Graft Syrah 2020

'On the nose, a heady mix of red and black berries, pepper, dried herbs, olive, and violets while the palate has good weight, fresh acidity and firm but by no means coarse tannins – a dense and savoury affair (alcohol is 13.5%).'Christian Eedes, Winemag, 95/100
