Iconic Stellenbosch farm releases 95+ Cabernet – Thelema 2017
Ever since we tasted the 2017 Thelema Cabernet Sauvignon en-primeur in 2018, we’ve been eagerly awaiting its release. Back then, we scored it 93-95 points after tasting it blind! Considering their track record, the high quality of the vintage and the price, this is a must-buy.
'Make space in your cellar now – you are going to need it for this new release!' – Greg Sherwood MW, 95+ points
Like with Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon in general, there’s a new sense of purpose and focus at Thelema and 2017 is undoubtedly shaping up to be one of the finest vintages. With more complexity, refinement and fruit purity, it surpasses the powerful 2015 vintage. This is a stunning wine and a pure expression of fine Stellenbosch Cabernet from an iconic Stellenbosch producer.
As much as we love the New Wave, we have to applaud Thomas Webb when he says, 'the New Wave craze has peaked,' and goes on to explain, 'new and different isn’t enough of a story anymore. People want consistency, history and legacy. Otherwise, where’s the substance?' Thelema certainly delivers on all 3 aspects. With Thomas’s father, Gyles Webb, recently named Winemaking Legend in Tim Atkin’s 2019 SA report and 2 decades of consistently high-quality wines to their name, we believe Thelema sits in the top ranks of SA Cabernet producers.
