Meerlust Rubicon 1995 – An international legend
Chris Williams, the ex-Cellar Master of Meerlust, was the assistant winemaker to the legendary Giorgio Dalla Cia for the 1995 vintage. 'One of my favourites in the 1990s, along with the 1998 and 1991. Perhaps the greatest we made,' remarked Chris this morning about the 1995 Rubicon.
Chris went on to add, 'the 1995 Rubicon perfectly demonstrates South Africa’s New World and Old World balance. The classic restraint is more akin to Bordeaux with slightly more plush fruit. It is currently in a great drinking window.'
Revered from release, it is one of only a handful of SA wines to be named a 'Decanter Legend'. In 2016, Decanter reported: 'few can match Rubicon for sheer finesse'.
'Extraordinarily fragrant on the nose with notes of violets and fynbos before red and black fruit as well as more tertiary qualities like mushroom and earth. Some heft on the palate – sweet fruited on entry but the finish suitably savoury.' – Christian Eedes, 94/100 (2015)
The blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23 % Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, it is 13% alcohol and comes from a warm, dry season with ideal harvest conditions. Stored at Wine Cellar for almost 2 decades, Strauss & Co currently has a pristine 12-bottle case of this 1995 Rubicon on auction. This poses an extraordinarily rare investment opportunity as it remains one of the most scarce and iconic wines of the 1990s.
