Kanonkop Paul Sauer 1991 – An international legend
The legendary 1991 Paul Sauer was the first of 4 Paul Sauer vintages to win the Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Trophy for the World’s Best Red Blend at the International Wine and Spirits Competition. This was a tremendous achievement for a new South African wine and it helped carve the world’s view of modern-day SA.
Wines of that era are generally elegant and powerfully structured but few still show purity of fruit. ‘It has another 20 years left in the bottle,’ remarks winemaker Beyers Truter after drinking it recently. He remembers 1991 as having ‘excellent vintage conditions with amazing fruit’ and he only has a few special bottles left.

80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot, it is 12.85% alcohol and was matured in new oak for 25 months. As part of the 115 fine local and international Bordeaux-themed lots on auction, lot 11 is an immaculately-stored 12-bottle case of the Kanonkop Paul Sauer 1991.
