I find white wines very useful as food wines, offering great flexibility. At this time of the year, Chardonnays are particularly appealing. They offer comfort, sometimes power and exceptional pairing flexibility. One of the must-haves at the moment is the Paul Cluver Estate Chardonnay 2017, which is a near-perfect expression. It’s exceptionally pure and electric with a beautiful balance between the defined fruit and freshness that characterises the excellent 2017 vintage.

Organic and family-owned, Château Pesquié shows what greatness the southern Rhône is capable of. Their Le Paradou Grenache 2017 has been one of our top-selling wines for the past few years and this near-perfect vintage should be no exception. It's fresh, crunchy and utterly smashable. The 2008 Vergelegen Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a great Cab from a tough vintage. Classic cassis and generous fruit with typical Vergelegen savouriness. The screwcap closure has helped to retain the wine's freshness and should continue to do so for another 5-8 years. At the same price as the current release from the estate, it's a no brainer.
