Sijnn Red 2017: 96-point, one-of-a-kind red

'One of the most beautiful and complex terroirs in South Africa.'Tim Atkin MW, 96/100

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Sijnn – David Trafford's pioneering Malgas project – has long been tantalising us with the potential of this rugged, raw terroir. The latest Sijnn Red delivers on that promise. It’s a wine like no other, with no reference point but itself.

The 2017 Sijnn Red (96 PG, 96 TA) is a blend of 67% Syrah, 14% Mourvèdre, 11% Touriga Nacional and 8% Trincadeira. It is rich, broad and flavourful, yet fresh with dried herbs, black olives and baking spices. A touch of earth, meaty depth and elegant tannins are all accentuated by its alluring acidity. The wine is seamless, sure-footed and a vision come true. It is really something special in this vintage.

One of Tim Atkin's 'Wines of the Year', scoring 96 points in his 2020 report, you can drink it now through to 2030 – and possibly longer.

Also made by Charla Bosman (Haasbroek), who has led the winemaking team since 2015, the Mediterranean-style 2019 Sijnn White is a blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Roussanne and Verdelho. Now well established as a great South African white, it offers notes of peach pith, ripe, red apples and juicy pear. The racy minerality and fresh salinity complement its textured mouthfeel.

Located along the Breede River, everything they do at Sijnn revolves around its unique location and terroir. They believe in natural farming and winemaking and focus their skills on blending varieties best suited to our climate.

Tasting notes

Sijnn, Red 2017

'Distinctive shiraz-driven flagship with Mourvèdre, Touriga & Trincadeira (Tinta Amarela); the entire focus of the cellar. 2017, like 2016 (4.5 stars, 94 pts), elegantly powerful, with rich dark spice, chocolate & sweet fruit offset by lively acidity, firm tannins. 20% new oak, 18 months.'Platter's Guide, 5* (96/100)

'One of the most beautiful and complex terroirs in South Africa supplies the grapes for this unique red, produced from a medley of Shiraz with 33% Mourvèdre, Touriga Nacional and the very rare (in South Africa) Tinta Amarella. Inky, savoury and wild, it has freshness and concentration, notes of rosemary and lavender, meaty depths and fine oak. Drink 2023-30.'Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 96/100

Sijnn, White 2019

'Individual & rather gorgeous, limpid gold 2019 from 84% Chenin, has Viognier, Roussanne & Verdelho adding floral aromas & apricot notes. More savoury than fruity, richly full of flavour, textured, with a fine natural acidity. 10% new oak, moderate 13.4% alcohol.'Platter's Guide, 4.5* (94/100)

'Made with fruit from young bush vines out in the wilds of Malgas, close to the mouth of the Breede River, this is an excellent counterpoint to the world-class red. Stony, bready and refined, with green apple, pear and peach skin flavours, racy minerality and some tannic structure from partial skin contact. Drink 2021-25.'Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 93/100
