Shannon RocknRolla Pinot Noir 2019 – It is rock and roll!

Few wines have been this exciting for us. While the 2019 is the third vintage made by the Pinot masters, Gordon and Nadia Newton Johnson, we were unable to offer you any stock of the first two releases (2016 and 2018). But finally, we have managed to secure a small, exclusive allocation of the 2019 – the only ones in SA.

The Shannon RocknRolla is sourced from a vineyard established in 2000 and the age of the vines really shows. There is a layered complexity with beautiful fruit weight and structure on the palate – so often missing in our top Pinots. This is one of Elgin's finest Pinot Noirs and will certainly develop a future following, so be sure to get some!

Gordon named it RocknRolla as the barrels from this single vineyard were always a head and shoulders above the others. It took some convincing but, wow, what a wine. Grown in Shannon’s oldest block, the vines (Dijon clone 113) were planted by one of SA’s best grape growers, James Downes. First destemmed, the berries were sorted and then fermented with natural yeasts, leading to a slow fermentation before being aged in lightly toasted barrels (50% new). There is a wonderful sense of depth here that is rarely seen in local Pinot.

This small-batch cuvée, of which only 1,000 bottles are produced, is the most exciting addition to Elgin’s portfolio in a long time.

Tasting notes

Shannon, RocknRolla Pinot Noir 2019

'It has an amazing and enthralling nose of floral perfume, red and black berry fruit, and a subtle earthy depth. The palate follows with loads of promise – complex and layered with dried flowers, musk and berry fruit. Nicely rich and juicy with a deep structure. There is a wonderful range of red to black fruit with a taut and coiled intensity to match. Give it some time in the bottle. Should go 10 years and beyond.'James Pietersen (May 2021)
