Exclusive releases including SA’s most sought-after Syrah
Reenen Borman is a true Rhône junky and it shows. He’s fast becoming the best Syrah producer in SA, considering the following critical acclaim surrounding the Epilogue:
- 'A ground breaking paradigm shifting Syrah' – Greg Sherwood MW (Epilogue 2014)
- Overall Red Wine of the Year – Tim Atkin MW’s Special SA Report 2016
- The first SA wine to crack 98/100 from Tim Atkin MW
As well as the outstanding scores given to his goal-post-shifting Sons of Sugarland Syrah 2018:
- 97/100 Platter’s Guide
- 97/100 Christian Eedes
- 'It's a Syrah lover's Syrah' – Tim Atkin MW
He’s no slouch with Chenin either, considering the almost cult-like following of the Patatsfontein Steen, which is a unique wine from an old single vineyard situated 600m above sea level in the Montagu mountains. Planted on Karoo slate and shale, the 2019 has lots of fruit power with yellow stone fruit, macadamia nut and a long, lingering finish with a truly impressive and refined edge.
The 2018 Sons of Sugarland blew us away and the 2019 is of the same ilk. It’s such an extraordinarily pure and transparent expression of Syrah. Like the 2018, the 2019 Sons of Sugarland is immensely impressive and delicious. From a single vineyard in the Polkadraai Hills, it’s raised in cement with whole bunch components and minimal intervention and wouldn’t look out of place in a northern Rhône line-up.
Both these wines are rare, small-batch productions and crucial to all SA fine wine collectors. The Sons of Sugarland is limted to 6 bottles per person.
Please note, while we are still taking orders, wines will only be dispatched after lockdown has been lifted.
The Patatsblanc 2019 is a crisp-edged, interesting white with good fruit weight. It has great texture and savoury length, making it the perfect food wine. This Colombard-based blend is produced from Montagu vineyards grown on Karoo slate. The terroir is key here as it gives the wines their reductive tightness which balances all that sunny fruit. These unique soils also add a Fynbos-like character to the Patatsblanc as well as a distinct, saline finish.
