Meerlust Rubicon 2018: A South African icon

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Meerlust Rubicon has been a Cape benchmark since release and is the country's oldest Bordeaux blend. To add to its cult status, it was recently one of the first SA producers to be sold as an NFT, again breaking new ground and leading the way in South Africa.

Vineyard replanting and subtle general upgrades ensure that the quality of the Rubicon is always on an upward trajectory. Such is the demand for excellence that no 2019 will be produced, and less Rubicon will be made in the short term until new vineyards come into production.

2018 is elegant and light-footed, offering brilliant drinkability and quintessential Meerlust freshness. It's a vintage to enjoy while the much-lauded 2017 matures.

Order now

The Meerlust Rubicon 2018 is a classic representation of the vintage. Refined, with a more approachable tannin structure, it offers earlier drinking than the powerful 2017, yet – like all Rubicons – it will age gracefully for decades to come. This iconic wine is usually Cabernet Sauvignon led, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot rounding out the blend. With no 2019, and future releases to be more limited, we suggest you stock up now!

Tasting notes

Meerlust, Rubicon 2018

'Renowned Bordeaux flagship cab-based, 67% in 2018 with merlot, cab franc, petit verdot partners. Enticing perfumed layers, elegantly concentrated plush, ripe fruit hint at future complexity; still unformed, like 2017 (5 stars, 95 pts) tightly sheathed by dense tannins. 56% new oak.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5*(93/100)

'Very deep, youthful colour, and intense almost purple hue. Quintessential Rubicon nose with violets, ripe plum, cedar wood, fennel, and intense spiciness. A typical liquorice note also evident on the nose. Still young and intense, the palate is full bodied, structured but packed with fresh dark fruit and rounded tannins. This is a vintage that is more approachable in youth because of the ripeness and richness levels attained in 2018 but will provide great complexity with further maturation.' – Meerlust Wine Estate
