Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon 2017: Pitch-perfect Cabernet

Dear *|FNAME|*,

With its fabled history and iconic Rubicon, Meerlust needs no introduction. Their 1975 Cabernet Sauvignon was the first wine to carry the Meerlust label. It speaks to the importance of the variety (the ‘king of grapes’) at this Bordeaux-styled property.

From an exceptional Stellenbosch vintage, the 2017 Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon offers brooding cassis, mulberry coulis and bruised rose over tilled earth, graphite and spice box notes. Everything you would expect from a Cab is here in one delicious package. Fine-grained tannins, deep and dark fruit, savoury-etched complexity, and a lifted bouquet garni of freshness. With decades of maturation potential guaranteed, this is one for the cellar!

The Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards are planted on well-drained, granite gravel soils. With a proximity to the ocean similar to that of Bordeaux, this combination of soil and situation offered the perfect ripening conditions in 2017. From only free-run juice, the 2017 was raised in 70% new French oak barrels for 17 months and is perfectly realised.

A recent tasting of the 2015 vs 2017 confirms the hyped excellence of the 2017 vintage and, with just a few 2017s still to be released and its incredible ageing potential, this Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon is a no-brainer.

Tasting notes

Meerlust, Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

'Classic 2017 already flaunting cab’s sweet blackberry fruit, gentle opulence, also freshness; all safely secured by usual bracing structure, fine & ripe, but leaving no doubt time is required to harmonise. Oak, 70% new French, seamlessly absorbed.'Platter's Guide, 4.5* (94/100)
