95-point Kolbroek Syrah 2017 – 'Sure to bring you joy'
Natural wines have a devoted, geeky following in SA and few local winemakers are as dialed-in as Jurgen Gouws! His winemaking journey includes stints at Matassa, Sadie Family and with his good friend Craig Hawkins of Testalonga.
Sadly, one of Wine Cellar’s favourite Intellego wines, the 2017 Kolbroek Syrah, is to be discontinued. This wine is an excellent example of Jurgen’s vision; one of honest, non-intervention winemaking that captures the spirit of Swartland Syrah. Wonderfully fresh with razor-like acidity, it’s complex, serious and dry and wouldn’t look out of place in a Rhône line-up. We have only a few cases left of this delicious, 95-pointer.
'Wines made by Jurgen always have an honesty and freshness about them. He makes joyous wines that excite and intrigue the drinker.' – David Clarke
Raised in 500L older oak and sourced from two different parcels, Jurgen’s natural approach eschews the use of enzymes, cultivated yeast and excessive oak influence. The 2017 Kolbroek Syrah has a deep, attractive 'moreishness' and alluring, dark bramble fruit with olive tapenade and biltong spice that pull you in. It’s undeniably savoury! The palate follows in high spirits with a vibrant and racy acidity that wakes you up. Once you acclimatise, it’s a pure joy to drink – fresh, bone-dry, savoury and brimming with character.
