Domaine Huet 2019s: 'In a word: marvelous. In three words: don't miss it.' – Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Domaine Huet in Vouvray is a world icon for pure, mineral-style Chenin Blancs. The praise for Huet's 2019s abound. After the great 2018s, 2019 was sunnier and drier, yet another terrific vintage in the Loire.

Stephan Reinhardt from Wine Advocate wrote that the 2019s 'are the finest, purest, most delicate yet also intense Vouvrays I have had from Huet in recent years'. Antonio Galloni from Vinous agreed, saying he 'was blown away by the [2019 Huet] wines'.

Both the 2019 Huet Le Mont Demi-Sec and Clos du Bourg Sec show incredible complexity, depth of flavour and finesse, underlined by mineral tension, pure-fruited vibrancy and a moreish, saline finish. While they are hard to resist right now, they promise near-unparalleled longevity – up to 2070!

Outside of South Africa, some of the best Chenin Blancs hail from the Loire Valley, with Vouvray arguably the world's Chenin Blanc capital. The chalky soils produce some of the longest-ageing wines in the world. Established in 1928 and farmed biodynamically since 1990, Huet owns 3 of the best vineyards in the appellation – Le Haut-Lieu, Clos du Bourg and Le Mont. Le Haut-Lieu spans 10ha and is the original Huet vineyard purchased in 1928. After that, the 8ha Le Mont parcel followed in 1957 and the final 6ha Clos du Bourg vineyard in 1963. These produce wines with varying degrees of sweetness depending on the vintage.

Tasting notes

Huet, Clos du Bourg Sec 2019

The 2019 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Sec offers a deep, rich yet pure and refined, intensely aromatic, darker-toned nose with aromas of fully ripe stone and tropical fruit intertwined with earthy, chalky and yeasty notes that make up for further finesse and complexity. Full-bodied, round and fruity on the palate, this is a deep, intense, juicy, silky-textured yet tight, chalky, very complex, sustainably structured and persistently salty-mineral Chenin from old vines that give extra concentration as well as a spectacularly expressive character. This is a great, age-worthy Vouvray with fine tannins and lingering salty tension and finesse. What a finish! The 2019 needs a while to gain finesse and even more complexity. The wine served from the bottle that I tasted nine days before was incredibly amazing! The 2019 is a duty for all Chenin aficionados! Drink 2026 - 2060. – Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, 97/100

The 2019 Sec Clos du Bourg is a wine of stature and vertical build. There is real gravitas to the orchard fruit, spice and earthy flavors. Tasted blind, Clos du Bourg might be confused with a red wine such is its feeling of volume and structure. Far from an easygoing Vouvray, Clos du Bourg is a very serious wine. I loved it. In a word: marvelous. In three words: don't miss it. Drink 2020 - 2034. – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 95/100

Huet, Le Mont Demi-Sec 2019

The 2019 Vouvray Le Mont Demi-Sec is clear, fresh, deep and complex yet pure, fine, elegant and perfectly interwoven on the nose, where notes of crushed flint stones, limestones and concentrated citrus fruit aromas and even iodine notes are revealed. Very elegant and refined on the palate, this is a round, juicy, seductively fruity yet firmly structured and piquant Le Mont whose sweetness is captured by fine tannins and a sustainably dense, vital and salty finish. The 2019 Demi-Sec is a great Chenin and the finer Le Mont of the two, and it is doubtlessly a long-distance runner that should be cellared for at least a decade even though it's hard to resist today. Impressive! Drink 2030 - 2070. – Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, 97/100

Elegant yet expressive and supercomplex, with cooked quince, mirabelle plum and yellow apple notes, plus hints of ruby red grapefruit, the acidity and bitterness balanced by the suggestion of sweetness. Vibrant and unctuous, with the sweet edge emerging midpalate and extending on the mineral-infused finish, which is long, with lovely tension and cut. A very focused, harmonious and pure white. Best from 2022 through 2036. – Wine Spectator, 95/100

The 2019 Demi-Sec Le Mont is a gorgeous expression of this site. In the Demi-Sec style, Le Mont naturally gains in volume and resonance, but it also has much more pronounced earthy, mineral inflections. Apricot, baked pear, marzipan, chamomile and lemon confit build into the bright, creamy finish. The 2019 is such a classy wine. Drink 2020 - 2034. – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 94/100
