Clemens Busch: Mind-bending Mosel Riesling

‘The glory of dry Riesling: The greatest white wine grape and also, arguably, the wine world’s greatest underdog.’Jancis Robinson

5th generation grower Clemens Busch and his wife Rita have gained a cult following for their laser-sharp, richly textured and terroir-defined wines. They focus on dry, elegant Rieslings that express the complex terroir of the historic Mosel region. An organic and biodynamic pioneer, Clemens eschewed using herbicides way back in the 1970s, while working alongside his father.

While their dry (trocken) wines are some of the finest, long-ageing Rieslings in all of Germany, the off-dry Kabinett is a fabulous, hedonistic Riesling according to Wine Advocate, offering ‘elegance, piquancy and stimulating salinity’. Wine Spectator calls the 2019s ‘very promising and gorgeously savoury’. Jancis Robinson opines that 2019 might be the breakthrough vintage for Mosel Riesling with its exceptional quality. ‘The characteristic of the 2019s is that, despite their appetising acid levels, so many of them are already a delight to drink,’ says Jancis.

Clemens Busch’s incredible range received the 2020 Collection of the Year award from Falstaff; one of Germany’s leading wine guides. Wine Advocate tells how his single-vineyard wines are ‘the finest I have tasted from Clemens Busch in 20 years’ adding that they are ‘great wines worth collecting’ – with scores up to 98 points!

Please contact me directly if you would like to receive an offer on the limited single vineyards of Fahrlay, Falkenlay, Rothenpfad and Raffes. ‘Busch's ability to produce seven plot-specific GGs from a single vineyard is unparalleled in German viticulture,’ says Ulrich Sautter from Falstaff.

Tasting notes

Clemens Busch, Riesling Trocken 2019

Bottled at the end of June, the 2019 Riesling Trocken intermixes ripe and juicy Riesling fruit with a delicate slate aroma. Lush and round on the palate, this is a delicate and even salty Riesling with juicy fruit and a fine Ribera structure on the finish. It has 10.5% alcohol yet is intense and expressive – stunning. Tasted at the domain from AP 25 20 in September 2020. Drink: 2020 - 2035. – Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, 90/100

Clemens Busch, Pündericher Riesling Kabinett 2019

The 2019 Marienburg Pündericher Kabinett is pure, bright and fresh yet heavily reductive on the nose that displays a kind of slate perfume with white fruit aromas. Lush and piquant on the palate, this is a hedonistic Riesling with elegance, piquancy and stimulating salinity. A fabulous Riesling that tastes rather like a very digestible Spätlese, though. Good length, grip and salinity. Drink: 2020-2045. – Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, 93/100
