Lynch-Bages, Pauillac 750ml 2005France, Bordeaux
Lynch-Bages, classified as a fifth grown in the 1855 classification, gets its name from its location in Bages. The vineyard was established in 1728 and came to belong to the Lynch family in 1749. Jean Michel Cazes joined in 1973 and modernized everything at Lynch Bages over the next fifteen years. He promoted the wines to the world like no other owner before and was also one of the first to begin promoting their wines in China. Lynch Bages holds the title of being the first wine sent into space when, in 1985, a French astronaut carried a bottle of 1975 Lynch Bages with him on the joint American/French space flight.
'Textbook, with mouthfilling and slightly gutsy black currant, fig and blackberry fruit flavors bound together by singed cedar, iron and tobacco notes. Features a tug of loam followed by a second wave of fruit through the finish. This is just starting to stretch out.—Blind '01/'03/'05 Bordeaux retrospective (December 2017). Best from 2020 through 2040.' – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 96/100
‘As for the 2005 Lynch-Bages, it is a sexy, surprisingly soft and accessible style of wine, with a deep ruby/purple color, loads of crème de cassis, cedar wood and forest floor notes, medium to full body, ripe tannin and a long, fleshy finish. Drink it over the next 15+ years.’ – Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, 92/100
