Luddite Cool by The Pool Red Blend 750ml 2022 Bottle size: 750ml
South Africa, Botriver
R250
'The soon-to-be released Luddite Shiraz 2019 is the 20th vintage of this wine and it’s in the same distinctive style as ever – terroir is an ambiguous term but what ever else you might say about this rendition, it’s unlike anything you may encounter from Stellenbosch, Swartland or just about anywhere else. Niels points out that 2019 was the last year of the infamous Western Cape drought that began in 2015 – yields were badly affected, and volumes of the Shiraz consequently dropped from 15 800 bottles in 2014 to 5 800 in 2019. While 2019 was indeed dry, it was also very cool – very small, flavourful berries resulted. Including 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Mourvèdre, the 2019 spent 24 months in barrel, 10% new. Aromatics are evocative with notes of dark berries, lavender, black pepper, liquorice, clove and leather while the palate displays a dense core of fruit, bright acidity and crunchy tannins. Powerful, hearty stuff with loads of personality.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100
'Dark red in colour which carries through to the edge of the glass. Black cherries, welcoming spice and a touch of toastiness opening up to plummy dark fruit. Juicy fruit and spice on entry. A mouth-filling plumpness of dark fruit gives way to dry spices and tannin which balance the fruit beautifully. The finish is long, dry and savoury with underlying cinnamon sick sweetness.' – Winemaker

Producer information | In 1999 Niels and Penny Verburg established their own wine farm on the slopes of the Houw Hoek Mountains in Bot River. They named their farm Luddite, meaning ‘someone who is resistant to new technology or new ways of working’. This definition captures their winemaking philosophy perfectly as Niels is constantly striving to create perfect wines despite the challenging conditions thrown his way. Niels and his team at Luddite are incredibly passionate about their Shiraz and are never willing to compromise on quality. This dedication translates into consciously-farmed grapes and small-batch wines that have amazing character. |
