Franco Lourens is owner and winemaker for the own-label he began in 2016, when he joined Alheit Vineyards as assistant winemaker. He said, ‘working with Chris Alheit is by far the most important and biggest highlight of my career’. He makes his own wines in that Hemel-en-Aarde cellar, from widely sourced grapes, with a ‘hands-off’ philosophy: old-oak maturation, no additives other than a little sulphur. His aim, with his single-site wines, is ‘to tell the story about the place, soil and farmer’.

Tasting notes:
'Named after Franco Lourens' dad, whose image appears on the label, Howard John is a separately fermented blend of mostly Grenache with 57% divided between Cinsault, Syrah and Carignan. Dry farmed and fermented with a high proportion of whole bunches, it's pale, savoury and spicy with racy red cherry and pomegranate fruit. 2021-25.' – Tim Atkin SA Special Report 2019, 93/100

'A blend of 43% Grenache and 14% Syrah, both from Swartland, 32% Cinsault from Darling and 11% Carignan from Wellington. A captivating nose showing red and blackberries, musk, herbs, lavender plus darker notes of olive and turned earth. The palate has a lovely clarity about it with pure fruit, electrifying acidity and powdery tannins before a super-savoury finish. Light-bodied (alcohol is 12%) yet no shortage of detail.' – Christian Eedes, 95/100
