'Flagship nods to the original red wines of the Cape, from some of its oldest vines - cab, cab franc & cinsault (58/28/14) in multiple terroirs. Extraordinary 2019’s gossamer tannins coddle spicy cassis & bramble fruit, Earl Grey perfume adds mystery & uniqueness. Year in 30% new barrels, further 12 months in 5,000L foudres, plus one extra year in bottle at cellar to express itself. Will grandly reward 15 or more.' – Platter's Guide, 5* (95/100)

'The Leeu Passant Dry Red is a tribute to the Cape blends of the 1950s and 1960s, combining Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from Stellenbosch with 14% Cinsault from the legendary Basson vineyard in Wellington. Pale, herbal and intense, it's a wine that would be easy to overlook in a blind tasting, with its gentle graphite perfume and scented redcurrant, hibiscus and blackcurrant leaf complexity. 2023-30' – Tim Atkin, MW, South African Special Report 2022, 95/100

'56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc and 16% Cinsault. Enticing aromatics of cherry, cranberry, cassis, musk, some subtle leafiness and spice while the palate has striking fruit definition, bright acidity and fine tannins. There’s an effortlessness of execution and tribute to the blends of the mid-20th century that this is, it comes across as wonderfully coherent and convincing.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 96/100

'The well -integrated proportions of the 2019 blend are reflected in this wine with an inviting wave of cassis, dried bramble and Bergamot orange on the nose and a firm structure, silky tannins and beautifully seamless finish. This wine is something very special and will requite if cellared optimally over the next few decades. It is best served at 16-18°C and will greatly benefit from decanting in its youth.' – Mullineux & Leeu

Producer information Since 2013, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have been working on a new project that focuses on vineyards outside of the Swartland appellation which have been specially selected by Rosa Kruger. Together with their partner Analijt Singh they launched their game changing Leeu Passant wines. Produced from old vines, including the oldest registered red wine vineyard in South Africa, these wines redefine the South African wine landscape. Their inspiration comes from past successes of the 50s, 60s and 70s, like Château Libertas and Rustenberg Dry Red. Their wines speak of South Africa's heritage and bring the unique wines of the past into the future.
