Leeu Passant new releases

Re-imagining the future

The Leeu Passant Dry Red 2019 is inspired by some of South Africa's longest lasting and most unique wines. It's ultimately the result of Chris and Andrea Mullineux's careful discovery and deconstruction of what made the legendary SA wines of the 1950s, '60s and '70s so successful. The Dry Red is an immense wine that is shaping a future heritage.

The new releases are all excellent, with nuanced improvements across the range. The Chardonnay 2020 is electric; the 122-year-old Cinsault vineyard has produced a beguiling wine in 2020; and the Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 offers layered elegance. The Leeu Passant label is ambitious, and these releases clearly reflect their vision to bring the great wines of the past into the future.

Leeu Passant wines

The Leeu Passant Chardonnay 2020 is from a maritime, single Stellenbosch vineyard situated on the Helderberg. It's brimming with sunshine fruit, ripe citrus and vibrant natural acidity and is a Stellenbosch Chardonnay benchmark.

The 2020 Leeu Passant Wellington Old Vines Basson Cinsault, from vines planted in 1900, offers a haunting and ethereal array of delicate fruit and spice, followed by a layered and complex palate that astounds with its subtle power and regal tannic core. This wine is sure to last for decades!

From a combination of Stellenbosch vineyards, the Leeu Passant Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 is a clear nod to Bordeaux. It has a medium-bodied, fresh palate supporting red and black fruit, with an earthy overlay. Deeply satisfying with lingering, ripe tannins.

The Old Vine Cinsault forms the inspirational heart of the Leeu Passant Dry Red 2019 blend. It's 58% granite-grown Polkadraai Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Helderberg Cabernet Franc, rounded out by Cinsault – the whole greater than the parts. It's a wine to cellar for many decades and is a true modern classic.
