'The oldest red wine vineyard in South Africa, planted in 1900, might not look like much from the road, but this 0.8-hectare parcel produces one of the best Cinsaults in the country. Dense and concentrated, especially for a variety that tends to lightness, this has black cherry, redcurrant and tobacco leaf notes, sinewy tannins and a savoury finish. 2025-35' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2024, 96/100

‘Grapes from a vineyard planted in 1900. Matured for 21 months in 500-litre barrels. Rose, cranberry, raspberry, prune and spice on the nose while the palate has both breadth and depth – weighty and round with layers of flavour, the finish savoury. A sumptuous wine, the only weakness perhaps a slight heat to the finish – alcohol is 14.5%.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100

'From SA's oldest registered red-wine vineyard, planted 1900 & named for original owner. Gentle foot crushing 2022 releases delicate floral & perfume, red cherry flesh, wrapped in smooth, powdery tannins with concluding fresh grip. A triumph that will develop decade or more. Older 500L barrel, 20 months, as 2021 (4.5 stars, 93 pts).' – Platter's Guide, 5* (95/100)

Producer information Since 2013, Chris and Andrea Mullineux have been working on a new project that focuses on vineyards outside of the Swartland appellation which have been specially selected by Rosa Kruger. Together with their partner Analijt Singh they launched their game changing Leeu Passant wines. Produced from old vines, including the oldest registered red wine vineyard in South Africa, these wines redefine the South African wine landscape. Their inspiration comes from past successes of the 50s, 60s and 70s, like Château Libertas and Rustenberg Dry Red. Their wines speak of South Africa's heritage and bring the unique wines of the past into the future.
