Etienne Le Riche: Winemaking Legend - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2023
‘Same wards as Reserve plus Jonkershoek, masterly 2021 finer, leaner than 2020 (4.5 stars, 94 pts), subtle hint of blackcurrant decadence, iodine & rockpool complexity. House’s hallmark coiled intensity, shaped by 22 months in oak, 18% new, augurs well for cellaring.’ – Platter's Guide, 5* (95/100)

‘This is "just" the basic Cabernet Sauvignon from Christo Le Riche, but it's a brilliant wine in its own right. Using grapes from ten different vineyards across Stellenbosch in Firgrove, the Helderberg, Jonkershoek, Raithby and the Simonsberg, it's a masterclass in blending. Matured in 18% new wood, it's wonderfully pure and scented, all violet, tar, tobacco leaf and liquorice, with plush yet structured cassis, black cherry and Asian spice flavours and thebackbone to age for another decade in bottle. 2025-35’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2023, 95/100

'Deep garnet in colour. Inviting aromas of plum, cherry and blackcurrant with hints of violet and cedar. On the palate the wine is fruit forward showing delicious fresh black fruits and a juicy entry. Firm tannins assist in creating a voluptuous, creamy mouthfeel which is balanced by a long, appetising finish. A classic Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon.' – Winemaker

Producer information Le Riche was founded in 1996 by Etienne le Riche, one of the founding members of the Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG). Situated on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, it is now run by Etienne’s son, Christo and daughter, Yvonne. Le Riche are known for premium red wines in a classic South African style. Grapes are selected from top growers in Stellenbosch, coming from mainly two soil types – decomposed granite soils and sandy gravel. The winemaking approach is traditionally simplistic, yet innovative.
