‘This wine has a lemon colour with primary fruit aromas of apple, pear, lime and peach. Some secondary aromas are present from the ageing for one year in large oak barrels on the lees. It has a medium palate, acid and alcohol with a persistent finish.’ – MacRoberts and Canals

'The bright pale-yellow 2018 Laventura Viura was produced with grapes from two plots: one in Villabuena de Álava and the other one in Laguardia, where the old vines have both red and white grapes interplanted. It fermented and matured for one year in a 2,500-liter oak vat and 500-liter oak barrels. There is no oak, and there is a sense of harmony and subtleness that I like very much. It showcases the profile of the grape and the cooler year. It's medium-bodied and has moderate alcohol, and it's clean, tasty and precise, which is the house style. The wine is austere rather than exuberant, 5,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2019. 2020 - 2024.' – Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, 93/100 (Oct 2020)

Producer information Former Young Gun, Bryan MacRobert, moved to Rioja 7 years ago to start Laventura. Today, his new terroir-driven wines are causing a fuss! ‘I want to make Rioja as it once was. I’m trying to make honest wines,’ says Bryan whose wines are refreshing, innovative and true-to-terroir style of Rioja. With cellars located in the centre of La Rioja, they source high-quality grapes from the whole region. The vineyards are often 40 to 90 years old and harvesting is done by hand. ‘It’s time to take Rioja far more seriously,’ writes Tim Atkin MW as the Rioja landscape changes dramatically.
