'Currant, chocolate, wet-earth and cedar aromas follow through to a medium to full body with integrated, refined tannins that build on the palate and follow through in a polished way. Give it three or four years to open, as it seems rather tight. Almost all merlot with some cabernet sauvignon. Try after 2025.' – James Suckling,, 95/100

'The second wine of this beautiful estate certainly doesn't taste like a second wine, and the 2018 La Gravette De Certan certainly put a smile on my face. Based on 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in 50% new barrels, it has the same supple, seamless, sexy style of the Grand Vin, only with the volume turned down slightly. Redcurrants, truffle, tobacco, hints of chocolate, and damp earth all emerge on the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a beautiful core of sweet fruit, silky tannins, and a great finish. It can be drunk today or cellared for 15 years or more.' – Jeb Dunnuck, 94/100

'From young vines under 20 years old, accounting for around one-third of overall production. Just beautifully mouthwatering, with rosebud notes alongside ripe berry fruits, and slight hints of smoked cigar box on the finish. This is a lovely Gravette, and when you go back to retaste after the first wine it still holds its own, just in a less muscular and complex style. 30% new oak. Drinking Window 2026 - 2045.' – Jane Anson, Decanter, 93/100 (Nov 2020)

'The 2018 La Gravette de Certan is a gorgeous second wine. Pliant, creamy and so expressive, La Gravette is everything a second wine should be. Juicy dark cherry fruit, spice, licorice, new leather and lavender fill out the layers effortlessly. No, the 2018 is not quite the 2016, but it's close. Drink 2023-2038.' – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 92/100 (Mar 2021)

'Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2018 La Gravette de Certan charges out of the gate with expressive notions of spiced blackberries, Black Forest cake and stewed plums, plus hints of cinnamon toast, dusty earth and iron ore, with a touch of potpourri. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with juicy black fruits, framed by velvety tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy. Drink 2022-2033.' – Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate, 91+/100 (Mar 2021)

'The 2018 La Gravette de Certan, the second wine of Vieux Château Certan, comprises Merlot blended with younger Cabernet Sauvignon vines, raised in 50% new oak. It has a more complex, nuanced bouquet than I encountered out of barrel; the brambly red fruit is still present, but now intermixed with light truffle, clove and espresso scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and light cracked black pepper notes mingling with the black fruit. Then it tightens up toward the finish, which feels fresh and delineated. This is an excellent La Gravette that should give up to 12 years of drinking pleasure. Drink 2022-2032.' – Neal Martin, Vinous, 90/100 (Mar 2021)

Producer information Vieux Château Certan is one of the oldest Bordeaux properties in Pomerol. The estate's history dates back to almost 1770. In 1924, the château was sold to the Belgian wine merchant Georges Thienpont. This successful businessman wanted to know which of his clients were buying his wine. To get this information, he decided to place the now famous pink capsule on the bottle. Thanks to this technique, Georges was easily able to see if his clients were purchasing his cuvée without having to ask them. Located at the top of the Pomerol plateau, the château is currently managed by Alexandre Thienpont. The vineyard is composed of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Being well-positioned and one of the oldest Pomerol properties, its wines are also some of the most sought-after.
