100% Grenache Noir

Kloovenburg vineyards stretch along the lower contours of Kasteelberg (which translates as Castle Mountain), offering a diverse collection of soils, altitudes and different slopes.

Of the farm's 300 hectares, 110 are under wine grapes, the best 30% of which are reserved for making Kloovenburg's own wines.

The soil is mainly Malmesbury schist, with strong loamy soil on the higher ground. The sandier loam lower down the slopes are supplemented by the area's rich Hutton soil. This varied selection of soils lends itself to planting proportions of 60% red and 40% white, comprise of the following cultivars: Shiraz, the most planted cultivar, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Novelle, Chenin Blanc, Colombar, Pinot Noir, Mourvedre and Petit Verdot.

In 2011, they planted bushvine Grenache, Mourvedre, Shiraz and Carignan and in August 2015 they extended their portfolio with Chenin Blanc, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Verdello.

Vinification:
All grapes are handpicked during the early morning hours and then cooled overnight in a temperature - controlled room at 5 °C. 70% of these grapes are then crushed and destemmed, whilst the remaining 30% is fermented as whole cluster. This is followed by a three day cold soak at 9 °C, covered with a CO2 blanket. Natural fermentation takes place in open fermenters. Extraction is obtained by light punch - downs twice a day. After fermentation is completed, the wine is left on the skins for another seven days and then pressed to old oak barrels. Malolactic fermenation is completed in the barrel. The wine is then racked from the lees and given a low dose of sulphur. The wine spend a total of 10 months in the barrel before it is bottled, unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting notes:
It has a light purple colour with aromas of dark cherries, pomegranate and dried herbs. The palate is medium bodied, showing good structure and fruit purity. It should be served with leaner meat dishes such as lamb, venison and turkey.

Analysis:
Alc: 14.0% RS: 1.3 g/L TA: 5.4 g/L pH: 3.46
