Kanonkop Pinotage 2021 Bottle size: 750ml
South Africa, Stellenbosch
R550
‘Power & precision align in pitch-perfect 2021, step up on refined 2020 (4.5 stars, 93 pts). From the grape, violets, cherries, forest berries & juicy tannins; from the barrique (18 months, 80% new), ash, toast, spice & deft structure; all enlivened by well-judged acidity. Impressive now, will reward patience. Available in many bottle sizes, as all except Black Label.’ – Platter's Guide, 5* (95/100)
‘Matured for 18 months in 225-litre barrels, 80% new. Enticing aromatics of violets, black cherry and plum plus hints of vanilla, toast and spice. The palate has good fruit definition, bright acidity and firm but not coarse tannins. Full-bodied but simultaneously balanced and lively. Flavourful and long on the finish, this is a wonderfully composed vintage. Alc: 14.28%.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100
‘Six different parcels at different altitudes on decomposed granite soils supply the grapes for this ambitious, age-worthy Pinotage from a master of the variety. Intensely aromatic, with notes of patisserie spices, coconut and coffee bean, fleshy tannins, impressive minerality and a core of bramble and black cherry fruit framed by 80% new wood. 2024-32’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2023, 94/100
‘A delightful and juicy wine, the 2021 Pinotage offers a ripe and fleshy expression of black raspberry, spiced plums and dark cherry skin with elegant oak spices and dusty florals with a soft, lingering potpourri essence. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is fresh and red-fruited with succulent acidity and fine-grained tannins that lift the mid-palate while displaying plenty of toasted oak essence. This Pinotage is gorgeous as it offers layers of attractive fruit and oak before gliding to a graceful, food-friendly finish. While it's still primary, this will undoubtedly improve with additional bottle age. About 70,000 bottles were filled after the wine matured for a year and a half in 80% new French oak. Nicely done! 2023-2036’ – Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, 91+/100

Producer information | Kanonkop Estate is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch Region of the Cape and confidently boasts with some of South Africa’s most premium wines. Kanonkop is a 4th-generation family estate, which was originally purchased by JW Sauer, a cabinet member in the parliament of the Union of South Africa. This estate has since then been handed down from father to son for over 40 years and is now in the talented, capable hands of its current owners Paul and Johann Krige. The name Kanonkop was derived from a kopje (hillock), from which a cannon was fired in the 17th Century to alert farmers in outlying areas that sailing ships plying the waters between Europe and the Far East had entered Table Bay for a stopover at Cape Town. |
