‘Not too far behind Black Label in terms of quality - and it's also a quarter of the price - this is a nuanced, beautifully expressed Pinotage from a master of the grape. Matured in 80% new oak, it displays liquorice, plum and black cherry flavours, subtle cinnamon and vanilla spices, plush tannins and supporting acidity. 2023-32’ – Tim Atkin, MW, South African Special Report 2022, 94/100

‘Bright purple-red colour. Bold aromas of plums, blackberries, hints of liquorice and tar, layers of smoke, roasted nuts and rich vanilla on the nose. The palate is packed with flavours of plums, cherries, black figs, dark chocolate, blackberries and spicy oak. The beautifully integrated plush, creamy tannins with satisfying acidity result in a wonderfully balanced wine with a long finish, promising great maturation potential.’ – Winemaker

Producer information Kanonkop Estate is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch Region of the Cape and confidently boasts with some of South Africa’s most premium wines. Kanonkop is a 4th-generation family estate, which was originally purchased by JW Sauer, a cabinet member in the parliament of the Union of South Africa. This estate has since then been handed down from father to son for over 40 years and is now in the talented, capable hands of its current owners Paul and Johann Krige. The name Kanonkop was derived from a kopje (hillock), from which a cannon was fired in the 17th Century to alert farmers in outlying areas that sailing ships plying the waters between Europe and the Far East had entered Table Bay for a stopover at Cape Town.
