Kaapzicht The 1947 Chenin Blanc 2022 Bottle size: 750ml
South Africa, Stellenbosch
R730
‘Matured for 10 months in a combination of 500-litre barrels (partially new) and, for the first time, a 400-litre clay amphora, the wine has a lovely interplay between fruit and acidity. On the nose, pear, peach, quince and pineapple plus herbs and hay while the palate has good presence despite a moderate alcohol of 13% – dense fruit, tangy acidity and a savoury, slighty grippy finish. A great showing from South Africa’s second oldest Chenon Blanc vineyard.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 96/100
‘South Africa's second oldest Chenin Blanc block never lets you down, yielding a world-class white on an annual basis. Fermented in one third new wood and, for the first time, a clay amphora for what Danie Steytler calls more "tension", this has understated concentration, quince, patisserie, citrus and stone fruit flavours and a patina of oak spices. 2024-30’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2023, 95/100
‘The 2022 Chenin Blanc The 1947 comes from 1.1 hectares of bush vines planted in that year by Danie Jr's great-grandfather. It is 50% whole bunch pressed and 50% crushed and matured in 500-liter barrels for ten months. It has a seductive bouquet showcasing the yellow plummy fruit, with touches of egg whites, custard creams and an underlying mineralité. The palate is very well-balanced, with real depth and elegance. Perfectly-pitched acidity, quite linear and focused, tensile with a touch of stem ginger on the finish. Excellent. 2023-2040’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 93/100
'Planted in 1947, the wine shows intriguing bay leaf and spice, more gold in colour. White florals, apricots, lemon preserves. Great balance of opulence and minerality. Aged in 500 litre barrels with 10% new french oak. Salty and viscous on the palate. Super perfumed, powerful and then lots of spice, dried herbs and apricots on the finish.'– Lauren Segers, May 2023
