In 1950, Jean-Louis Vergnon recreated his vineyards on the slopes of Côte de Blancs in Mesnil/Oger. First cooperator, he decided after few years not only to look after his vineyards, but also to make his own wines, pure Chardonnay with passion for the work from grapes to wine. His motto: Make exceptional grapes to make exceptional wines!
It was only in 1985 that they produced their first wines and were immediately put under the spotlight and distinguished as a 'Coup de Coeur' in 1987 by the Wine Guide Hachette for their first Extra Brut. The start of a long list of distinctions. Unfortunately he disappeared too soon, his example is still nowadays their inspiration. Their champagnes are all made exclusively with their own Grand Cru vineyards. Vinified in their house in Mesnil/Oger with the care of keeping the tradition alive and to perpetuate his know-how.
Classified Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs (white made with white grapes), so 100%, the village of Mesnil/Oger compared with its neighbours, is renown for the excellence of its soil and is exclusively growing the Chardonnay grape that gives fineness and elegancy to its wines. East facing, our vineyards are mainly growing above chalky subsoil. Here, the slope is crowned with a forest in which numerous lakes provide the necessary hydration. At J.L. Vergnon, they only grow and make wine out of Chardonnay, by blending several plots from their different crus, with different exposure, of over 30 years old vines on average, in order to reach this evenness in their Champagnes.
During the harvest, their grapes are exclusively picked up by hands, they press their grapes in a traditional and vertical press and after the settling of must, distribute the different musts among our stainless-steel vats or oak casks. It is from this moment and after a long period of care and patience in their vat room, that they will go on with a second fermentation in bottles and leave them ageing in their cellars, from 3 to 5 years depending of the cuvees. Then, their wines are disgorged 'à la vole' (by hand), a minimum addition of liquor (dosage) endows this true expression of typical terroir, with this vivacity, and nerve combined with unique fineness of Chardonnay.
