'There is a great intensity straight out of the gate. Beautiful, perfumed white flowers, white nectarine and fresh-cut pear follow and entice. The aromas keep unfolding while the palate impresses with flavour; layer upon layer. The massive, driving acidity is scathing in its precision – begging to be laid down to meld. There is power and depth here that speak of the quality of a fine vintage, hailed by Werner as one of the greatest he has experienced. It is sure to keep for decades, so please put these down for a couple of years! Best from 2026.' – James Pietersen (Jan 2022)

'Beautiful purity of limes and ripe gooseberry, with tropical, floral and fine herbal notes, ruby grapefruit and white pear drop on the finish. This is cool climate Sauvignon Blanc – vibrant, mineral, elegant, balanced and delicate, with a long, layered and complex finish.' – Werner Muller, Winemaker

Tasting notes on the 2020 vintage:
'Iona has developed a well-deserved following for its consistently impressive Sauvignon Blanc. Made with fruit from nine parcels on this picturesque farm, it combines elderflower, gooseberry and passion fruit flavours with a herbal twist from 4% Semillon and a whisper of oak. Drink 2021-23.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2021, 91/100

'Understated & elegant 2020 mostly unoaked, plumped by 7% splash naturally oak-fermented semillon & 5 months on lees. A range of soils & clones expressed in subtly integrated starfuit, waxy lanolin & fresh acidity. Though shade off 2019 (93 pts), a fine, youthful table mate.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (90/100)

Producer information In 1997, Andrew Gunn purchased the beautiful Geelbeksvlei farm located 420 meters above sea-level, overlooking the Elgin Valley. This apple and pear farm was no longer proving to be profitable, and so with the advantageous location of the farm, Andrew decided to plant vines and pursue winemaking. Its high altitude and close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean results in a cool mesoclimate which has a moderating influence and results in consistent quality.
