Coaxing the best from Swartland Syrah is a challenge and, while few manage to offer freshness whilst retaining complexity, the 2020 Intellego Syrah from terroir purist Jurgen Gouws achieves just that. It has all the wonderful aromas of olive tapenade, cured meat, blood orange and wild herbs, with a dark-fruited, mineral backbone and a long, dry finish.

With winemaking experiences at Matassa, Lammershoek, Stephane Ogier, Sadie Family Wines, and Roc d'Anglade, Jurgen Gouws has been strongly influenced by the natural wine movement. His wines are a 'celebration of the hard work done in the vineyards', and winemaking is done with no additions except for a minimum amount of necessary sulphur. These fresh, small-batch wines have immense personality and character – they are well worth seeking out.
