Jurgen Gouws, from our first group of Young Gunners, produces his own wines under the Intellego label. Influenced by the natural wine movement, he has always produced wines that test the boundaries but his irreverent style has evolved and the Syrah is much more serious than its label suggests. Intellego follows organic farming practices.

Tasting notes:
'This vintage involved semi-carbonic fermentation on at least half the wine. A rather beautiful and irresistible nose of lavender, rose petal, red and black fruit plus pepper. The palate shows good fruit density given an alcohol of just 12%. Lean and racy with a bone-dry finish. Pure, poised and sure to bring joy to fans of the variety.' – Christian Eedes,, 95/100

'Raised in 500L older oak and sourced from two different parcels, Jurgen’s natural approach eschews the use of enzymes, cultivated yeast and excessive oak influence. The 2017 Kolbroek Syrah has a deep, attractive 'moreishness' and alluring, dark bramble fruit with olive tapenade and biltong spice that pull you in. It’s undeniably savoury! The palate follows in high spirits with a vibrant and racy acidity that wakes you up. Once you acclimatise, it’s a pure joy to drink – fresh, bone-dry, savoury and brimming with character.' – James Pietersen, February 2020

Alc: 12%

About Intellego:
Intellego Wines are terroir driven from the Swartland Appellation. The Swartland experiences a warm, dry climate which is favourable to grape varietals such as Chenin Blanc, Syrah, Cinsaut and Mourvedre. By using small pockets of land on different sites, Intellego is able to produce wines with different personalities and characters. Intellego’s philosophy is to use minimal intervention and a hands-on approach during the winemaking process. They also follow organic practices.
