Ever staged in Africa

Strauss & Co’s upcoming auction will see six collections of the world’s greatest wines go under the hammer. The online sale will run from 3 to 10 July, and the sensational lots include Penfolds Grange, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Château Mouton Rothschild, Château d’Yquem, Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate.

The Coats Family Cellar is arguably the most prestigious collection ever offered in South Africa. Containing sought-after wines spanning over 150 years, every bottle is in top condition and has been authenticated by leading international fine wine expert, Michael Egan. This is a rare opportunity to buy superb wines at scale.

The lots and bottles have been minted with unique NFTs, adding further security.

Penfolds Grange 1951-2008 NFT

This is a selection from the first 58 years of Penfolds, starting with the maiden 1951 vintage. The New World’s most famous wine was produced by visionary Max Schubert, and the collection features a signed 375ml bottle of the 1952. The 232-bottle lot is close to a complete vertical.

Château Mouton Rothschild 1945-2014 NFT

Château Mouton Rothschild famously added artwork to their labels with the 1945. To commemorate the allied victory, Baron Philippe de Rothschild commissioned unknown artist Phillippe Julian. The 1945 turned out to be a legendary wine and the labels became a huge drawcard for collectors. This 176-bottle collection holds the celebrated 1982, 1986 and 2000 vintages.

Château d’Yquem 1892-2010 NFT

The world’s greatest sweet wine is showcased over 119 years, with four bottles from the 19th century. Acclaimed for their extremely long-ageing, complex wines, the Yquem lot includes leading vintages such as 2001, 1976, 1967, 1947, 1945, 1928 and 1899.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 1999-2015 NFT

The hallowed Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is minted into an NFT with 80 bottles from 1999 to 2015. This prolific period for Burgundy is highlighted by a mix of red wines from their various vineyards, including 17 bottles of La Tâche, and 2 bottles each of the 2009 and 2010 Romanée-Conti.

Harlan Estate 1990-2012 NFT

Harlan Estate is seen as Napa’s ‘First-Growth’ and its Cabernet Sauvignon-based flagship regularly commands towering prices. The Harlan Estate NFT features a bottle and magnum of their first commercial vintage, along with several 100-pointers – 1997, 2002 and 2007.

Screaming Eagle 1995-2010 NFT

This highly coveted California Cabernet is an American cult wine and matches the prices of Château Petrus! Produced in small quantities, it is notoriously difficult to secure, with long waiting lists to receive an allocation.

All wines are currently stored at Wine Cellar and professional worldwide shipping can be arranged. A portion of the sale will go to the South African Sommelier Association (SASA) – a registered NPO that promotes a culture of food and beverage service excellence through education.

WHY NFTS?

NFTs are a highly efficient way to package a collection of wines for long-term ageing or trading. The digital contract is stored on the Polygon blockchain and the NFT includes the critical transaction information regarding provenance, barcode, pictures, and pricing, along with sensorial and ageing details. Each bottle within the six NFTs is also minted as an NFT, allowing for drinking or trading of single bottles at any time. Transactions on the Polygon blockchain are cheap, fast and consume marginal energy.
