Hamilton Russell Vineyards, Chardonnay 1500ml 2018South Africa, Hemel-en-Aarde
There is a sense of surety, precision and personality in the 2018 Hamilton Russell Chardonnay. Delineated and light-footed with fragrant fruit and a thread of oak on the palate, it is both serious and bright at the same time. Though enjoyable now, primary and fresh, its structured core will ensure that it gets better with time.
‘Complex & deep, 2018 over-delivers with lovely honeysuckle, stonefruit & citrus notes perfectly paired with immaculate oaking (21% new, 5% of wine unwooded). Pithy texture & creamy mouthfeel satisfy through to last mouthful. A little more new wood on 2017 (4.5 stars, 93 pts).’ – Platter’s Guide 2020, 5* (95/100)
'Showing just a hint of reduction, this is a lovely Chardonnay that takes me back to the Burgundy 2018 en-primeur week in January. Côte de Beaune-like on the nose, with restrained notes of orange box and stoned fruits. This has great focus and grip on the palate and although there is plenty of weight and fleshiness, the prominent acidity keeps all the elements in perfect balance. Perhaps a bit more Corton-Charlemagne than Meursault, this is a very fine, top-class, Chardonnay. Drinking Window 2021 - 2029.' – Andy Howard MW, Decanter, 95/100
'The crop was tiny in 2018 - half of the normal yield, according to Emul Ross - but the quality and style of this celebrated Chardonnay is as good as ever. Fermented in amphorae and 29% new oak barrels, with 40% malolactic, it's elegant, savoury and oatmealy. Citrus rather than stone fruit flavours predominate on the palate. Drink 2020-26.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 95/100

About Hamilton Russell Vineyards:
Tim Hamilton Russell founded Hamilton Russell Vineyards in 1975 when he purchased one of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa. He was one of the trailblazing producers of Pinot Noir and certainly the driving force behind the birth of Pinot Noir in the greater Walker Bay region. Anthony Hamilton Russell, current owner, has made his mark both internationally and locally with the estate producing some of the country’s finest Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs.
