Graham Beck Cuvée Clive 2017 Bottle size: 750ml
South Africa, Western Cape
R1,300
‘Sophisticated flagship, extra-dry, 2017 60/40 chardonnay from Robertson & Napier, primary ferment in pièce champenoise (205L barrel), tank-fermented pinot noir ex Durbanville, 50 months on lees. Slightly riper than last but beautifully structured & fresh, finishes with pinot’s cranberry twist. 1.5L bottles of 2015 included in current Magnum Collection releases. No 2016.’ – Platter’s Guide, 5*(97/100)
'The 2015 Cuvée Clive - the previous release - was all Chardonnay, but this is a blend with 40% Pinot Noir, reflecting the "elegance" of the year in 2017. Still young, it's a magnificent, magisterial sparkling wine with wonderful precision, subtle wood undertones and flavours of pastry, strawberry and citrus supported by extract, tannin and chiselled acidity. Worth tucking away for a year or two. 2022-28.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2021, 96/100
'Two vintages of flagship sparkling tasted, both extra-dry. 2015 (5 stars, 97 pts) all-chardonnay, mostly ex Robertson, rest Darling. Lime, green apple entry followed by burst of fine mousse & mouthfilling richer flavours. Sophisticated, fresh, layers of fruit, minerality & brioche from primary ferment in pièce champenoise (205L) & 60 months on lees. 2017 60/40 chardonnay (Robertson & Napier) & pinot noir (Durbanville). Similarly made but 50 months on lees, pinot portion tank-fermented. Slightly riper but beautifully structured & fresh, finishes with pinot’s cranberry twist. No 2016.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (94/100)
'The 2017 Cuvée Clive is an intriguing Cap Classique of great elegance, poise and refinement. The Chardonnay portions combine seamlessly to create a bouquet of rich peach, apricot, apple and citrus aromas, with alluring hints of spice and toasted almonds form the barrels. The Pinot Noir elegantly dances through these aromas and adds layers of complexity on the palate with fresh cranberry, pomegranate and spicy undertones. The palate is elegant and fresh, while the lengthy time spent on lees has created a succulent texture which lingers long after the last sip.' – Graham Beck
