100% Pinot Noir

Serradenari is Barolo’s own mountain – the highest of the tesserae of a unique mosaic that from one side faces the Alps from Liguria to Monte Rosa and from the other, a sea of vineyards that roll into the horizon.

The farmhouse traces its name back many centuries to a time when the Black Death pushed the farmers of Barolo and La Morra to take what little money they had and escape to the top of the highest hill. Since 1450, that hill has been known as the 'money hill,' or 'Sara D’né,' which is now also an official subzone of the Barolo DOCG.

Serradenari descends from 536 meters of the highest vineyard Marassio to 450 meters of Pian delle Mole, deep in the wood, where was found the ancient ‘mola’ (gristmill, in the local dialect) that likely is the origin of the name of the place, La Morra. Very different soils for very different fruits. From the cold, windy highest point rich in limestone and silt to the lowest vineyard, warmer, sandier, rich in fossils.

Tasting note:
'The 2013 Langhe Pinot Nero La Tartufaia Giulia Negri opens to a shy and muted bouquet. There are tones of red rose, dried spice, cola and licorice. These aromas definitely recall the variety at hand, yet they stop short of delivering its full aromatic power. There is a note of bitter almond on the close.' – Wine Advocate

Tortonian with sandy-clayey soil.

Spontaneous fermentation (about 25 days) in truncated cone-shaped vats. About 14 months in 228-liter and 350-liter French oak barriques.

Winemakers notes:
'Time has flown so fast. My family has decided to entrust me with Serradenari: its vineyard, its cellars, its wine bottles, and its markets around the globe. It is an honour. But I shall never forget that when it all started, I was known as the Barologirl. Someone called me by that name because I wanted to make wine my own way. I loved my “garagiste” friends and their heretical, dogma-free wines. Just a few marvellous wines created by true vineyard craftsmen. So I bet all I had on the Nebbiolo, the Pinot Noir, and the Chardonnay, as well as on that Barolo mountain top, surrounded by one of the last standing truffle woods.

There is no dearth of competition, but the most formidable of competitions comes from within oneself. A ‘garagiste’ worth her salt knows that she doesn’t know much, that the art of the winemaker is in the continuous search. She must search and search, even at the cost of making mistakes, until she makes the world’s best wine.' – Gulia Negri, Winemaker
