Giulia Negri, Barolo La Tartufaia 750ml 2013Italy, Piedmont
Serradenari is the highest peak of the Barolo, a small balcony from which the eye catches the horizon. At its feet lie the Langhe, and straight ahead are the Alps, from Liguria to Mount Cervino, with Mount Monviso towering right in the middle of it all.
The Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay stay in the barrels at least a year; the Nebbiolo, fourteen months; the Barolo, at least thirty months.
'La Tartufaia is not a vineyard designation. It is a fantasy name used only by Giulia Negri of La Morra. The 2013 Barolo La Tartufaia offers a savory bouquet with dried fruit, pressed rose and charred earth. This vintage delivers tightly knit, finely textured wines, and you do get both those qualities here. It needs a few more years of bottle age to lose some of that youthful astringency. Some 10,000 bottles were made.' – Wine Advocate, 91/100
'Time has flown so fast. My family has decided to entrust me with Serradenari: its vineyard, its cellars, its wine bottles, and its markets around the globe. It is an honour. But I shall never forget that when it all started, I was known as the Barologirl. Someone called me by that name because I wanted to make wine my own way. I loved my “garagiste” friends and their heretical, dogma-free wines. Just a few marvellous wines created by true vineyard craftsmen. So I bet all I had on the Nebbiolo, the Pinot Noir, and the Chardonnay, as well as on that Barolo mountain top, surrounded by one of the last standing truffle woods.
There is no dearth of competition, but the most formidable of competitions comes from within oneself. A ‘garagiste’ worth her salt knows that she doesn’t know much, that the art of the winemaker is in the continuous search. She must search and search, even at the cost of making mistakes, until she makes the world’s best wine.' – Gulia Negri, Winemaker
