'This wine has a dry, solid character, with more tannins than fruit at this very young stage. Firm now, it will soften although its structure suggests it will likely continue to be a firm, structured wine for many years. Drink from 2020.' – Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, 92/100

'The 2014 Tinto (Quinta Vale D. Maria), the estate flagship, is a field blend sourced from 65-year-old vines, aged for 21 months in a 65/35 mixture of new and used French barriques. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. In this tough year, this shows very well, with fine concentration for the year, more than enough power and an initial burst of rich fruit. It certainly adds a layer of depth to the Vinha da Francisca and seems to hang together better overall than the CV. That said, like so many 2014s, the fruit flavor subsides pretty quickly and this won't exactly be remembered as the most vivid and flavorful of the Vale d. Maria bottlings. It is dry and a little dusty--and a little flat. With air, the mid-palate thinned a bit, too, but then it righted itself and showed equally well the next day, if rather stern and serious. It is a good performance for the year overall, although not the most charming offering ever in the brand. Maybe some extra time will help it develop better flavor. There is still potential here, as yet unrealized. Drink to 2032.' Mark Squires, Wine Advocate, 91/100

'Fragrantly dark-fruited and a llittle savoury on the nose but with fruit aromas of very small dark berries, less oak sweetness than many Douro wines in this line-up. On the palate, black cherry, dark and supple tannins with intensity but not heaviness. Chewy, savoury, dark-fruited finish. Refined even in youth. Dark, dry oaky finesse. Really savoury and coal-like. Lots of oak but with enough fruit intensity to come into harmony with a few more years in bottle. Classic Douro dry texture, schist as much as fruit and yet scented to the long finish. A conundrum of interlocking fruit and texture.' – Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20

Producer information Portugal is an exciting wine-producing country and the Douro, with the largest mountainous wine region in the world, is extremely rugged, strewn with very old vines on incredible schist rock. Quinta Vale D. Maria is situated in the Rio Torto valley in the heart of the Douro Valley. It is owned by Cristiano van Zeller who purchased the property in 1996. At that time it had only 10 hectares of vineyards which he has grown to 31 hectares today. The Quinta Vale D. Maria wines are highly sought-after, combining rich Douro fruit with refinement and power.
