87% Touriga Nacional, 13% Tinta Barocca

De Krans Wine Cellar is situated along the upper reaches of the picturesque Gamka River Valley in Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo. The rich and long history of the farm dates to 1890, when it was bought by the Nel family. The current cellar was built in 1964 by Chris Nel and his brother Danie. The first Portuguese grape variety in Calitzdorp was planted in 1973 at De Krans by a twist of fate. Chris Nel, father of Boets & Stroebel Nel, intended to plant Shiraz, which turned out to be Tinta Barocca, when the newly planted vineyard started bearing grapes in 1976!

Tasting notes:
'Phenomenally consistent, successful & long-lived 'port'. 2014 60% from touriga, as was 13, with tintas barocca & roriz, souzáo. 14 wonderfully rich & well-rounded mouthful of dusty cherries, ripe plums, dark choc & spice, the controlled fire of 19% alcohol seamlessly absorbed.' – Platter's Wine Guide 2017, 4.5*

'Dark black colour with plum red rim. Very aromatic nose of ripe red berries and cherries, stewed prunes and dark chocolate. A big wine full of ripe dark fruit notes of plum, mulberry and black currents. Well-rounded with smooth dark chocolate undertones and firm tannins results in n wine that would mature well over 30years.' – Winemaker

Viticulture:
Portuguese varietals where planted in Calitzdorp during the late 1970’s with Tinta Barocca being the first to find its way to the Klein Karoo. Now Calitzdorp is known as South Africa’s Port Capital with these varietals leading the way. 30-year-old vines are planted in shallow Karoo sand/clay on Buffelsvlei. Vines are trellised and micro irrigated.

Vinification:
Selected bunches are handpicked mid to late February from row selected vines in specific blocks at 26o Balling. Bunches are de-stemmed, crushed and rapidly cooled in a small open fermenter. Grapes are left to spontaneously start fermentation. At the desired sugar-level, the fermentation is stopped by adding alcohol to the juice. The wine is then matured in big vats for 20 months.
