Tasting notes:
'Grapes from Bottelary, Helderberg and Polkadraai. Matured for 22 months in 80% new barrique and 20% in foudre. Cranberry and cassis, cigar box and pencil shavings on the nose. The palate is medium bodied but not overly-refined with fresh acidity and fine tannins. Just about pitch-perfect.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 96/100

'Three different sites, the Helderberg, Bottelary, Polkadraai Hills combine for a nexus of opulence, minerality and fruit intensity. Intricate yet powerful, iodine and iron filings meld with bright cranberry fruit, earthy red berries, tobacco leaf and an incense like musk, seasoned with sweet spice from 22 months in new French oak. The fruit on the palate is precise and concentrated, tight, guarding the cassis to come. Woven tannin lies as gossamer silk, smooth but immutable, framing red plum compote that slowly reveals itself against a mineral granitic mid-palate; a refreshing acidity and moderate alcohol uplift and intensify the fruit purity and freshness on the finish.' – Winemaker

About Damascene:
Previously the winemaker at Boekenhoutskloof, Jean Smit has partnered with Canadian-born David Curl, the former owner of Château Gaby in Bordeaux, and South African-born Genevieve Hamilton-Brown to create the Damascene label. Jean Smit is a rising star in SA winemaking and certainly a winemaker to watch. They seek out unique vineyards and sites across the Western Cape winelands and have created an exciting, pitch-perfect set of wines which are placed amongst the finest in SA.
