From an Elandskloof vineyard (700m above sea level), the 2020 Mabalel is sensuous and silky with deep, dark fruit. It is a delight and will offer earlier drinking with its softer, rounded mouthfeel and exotic spice notes.
'Mabalel is a single vineyard wine from the legendary Kaaimansgat site and is a wonderfully silky, perfumed Pinot Noir. Destemmed because "it would be too green otherwise, according to Peter-Allan Finlayson, it has rose petal and orange zest aromas, filigree tannins, wild strawberry fruit and a racy finish. 2022-28.' – Tim Atkin MW, 2021 SA Report, 95/100

'The yields were the lowest ever - one third of the average - from this Elandskloof vineyard in 2019, but there's nothing wrong with the quality and no sign of over-concentration on the nose or palate. Producer information Crystallum, based in Walker Bay, South Africa, is a family-run and privately-owned winery which began in 2007. Brothers Andrew and Peter-Allan are the third generation of Finlayson winemakers and sons of the man who pioneered Pinot Noir winemaking in the Hemel-en-Aarde region. They specialise in the Burgundian varieties, and follow a low intervention winemaking approach. Peter-Allan Finlayson is a leader in producing some of the finest modern-day SA Pinots. Neal Martin says of their wines, ‘These are some of South Africa's finest Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays.’.
