About Crystallum:
Crystallum, based in Walker Bay, South Africa, is a family-run and privately-owned winery. Brothers Andrew and Peter-Allan are the third generation of Finlayson winemakers and sons of the man who pioneered Pinot Noir winemaking in the Hemel-en-Aarde region. Both work on the winery, however this was not the paths they took when studying.

Mabalel is named after a poem by the legendary South African polymath Eugene Marais, which tells the story of a local chieftain’s daughter of the same name who was ambushed while fetching water from the Limpopo River by the crocodile, Lalele. The vineyard is planted on ‘Kaaimansgat’ farm - meaning Crocodile’s lair - and a river flows past the vineyard. The site is 700m high and surrounded by dramatic mountains, with peaks that are often snow-capped in winter.

Tasting notes:
‘Transparent, pure, with tension from high-altitude Elandskloof origin. 2018 slow to unfold from initial intense freshness; succulent black & red cherry supported by gentle yet effective tannins. Both elegance & substance. 10% wholebunch, vs just 5% for 2017 (4.5 stars, 92 pts), 20% new oak.’ – Platter’s Guide 2020, 5* (95/100)

'Grapes from Elandskloof, 10% whole-bunch fermentation, maturation involving 20% new oak. Dark cherry, turned earth and a touch of reduction on the nose. Rich and round on the palate to the point of plush. Good depth of flavour, tangy acidity and smooth tannins. Alcohol: 13.5%.' – Christian Eedes,, 92/100

Fermented using only native yeasts and with a far lower portion of the fruit kept as whole clusters (10%) than the other Crystallum cuvées. The total time in tank was 29 days with a 14-day post-fermentation maceration. The wine was then transferred to barrel (20% new) where it remained for 11 months before bottling.
